Acts 20:20 (NIV) ~ you know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.

This verse of Scripture opens up a whole avenue of teaching. First, the Apostle Paul taught sound doctrine that was helpful for building people up. Then, notice he was not exclusive to only those who have a huge house, but went from house to house teaching the gospel no matter how big or small the venue, to Paul the people were more important than the building.

It is great to have the freedom to gather on a Sunday to hear the gospel, but some do not. Instead, they meet from house to house under the cloud of persecution, yet teach good, sound doctrine that builds people up. Within house meetings there should be things taught which are helpful to building each other up.

A house meeting should never be used as a gossip shop or a rally call to criticize the pastor or the leadership within the church.

To go from house to house is a way of reaching people and building up the local church. It is grass-roots evangelism where you can invite someone along after praying for him or her to come. When they come they should see how happy people are to meet together and that the word of God is presented in a way that is well-balanced, with authority and power in the Holy Spirit. Within a house meeting you can relax and try to get to know someone who you may not have the opportunity to get to know at a regular Sunday church meeting.

The Bible says in Acts 2:46 (KJV), “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.” Then again in Acts 5:42 (NIV), “Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.”

My friend, nearly every great church started with just a few people who loved Jesus, and met in each others houses and taught the word of God with gladness. If you get involved in a house meeting, then try to invite someone to come with you. Let it be centered on Jesus and let it be a place where someone can come and feel welcome, wanted and where they feel safe. It should also be a place of prayer, of worship and praise. The early church grew because the word of God was taken to the people on the streets in the highways and byways and also from house to house. May your church grow and grow as you take time to meet together and bring the gospel that will build people up and help them in their time of need.

God bless you my friend, Pastor Matthew.
