Nehemiah 1:5 (NIV) ~ Then I said: “O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands.”

Seven times in the NIV Bible, this powerful phrase is quoted, “covenant of love”. They are as follows…

1 ~ Deuteronomy 7:9

2 ~ Deuteronomy 7:12

3 ~ 1 Kings 8:23

4 ~ 2 Chronicles 6:14

5 ~ Nehemiah 1:5

6 ~ Nehemiah 9:32

7 ~ Daniel 9:4

It is very interesting to note that the words covenant of love give an entirely different meaning to the word love within the Hebrew language. The Hebrew word for love, within the context of covenant love, is hesed meaning unfailing love, loyal love, devotion, kindness, mercy, great love, merciful love, favor, and approval, all of which are based on a covenant relationship. The word hesed gives a stronger meaning to the word love, a binding covenant of love. You have the agape love of God meaning the active love of God for His Son and His people, and you have the hesed love of God, the hesed is a covenant-based word that God has between Himself and mankind, a very powerful, binding agreement based on covenant principles.

Stuart Townend once penned the words to this beautiful worship song with these lyrics:

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure,

That He should give His only Son, to make a wretch His treasure.

It was my sin that held Him there, until it was accomplished,

His dying breath has brought me life, I know that it is finished.

On the cross of Calvary God showed how much He loved the world in that He gave His Only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. On the cross of Calvary we can see the agape love of God in action, but also His hesed love, His covenant love for His people, coming together in a beautiful harmony of love towards those who keep His covenant. For when you receive Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior you become a partaker of His covenant blessings.

My friend, may the agape and hesed love of God bless you today with all the precious promises. May you be filled with His favor, and may His loyal love that will not let you go, His kindness, His mercy, His approval and His everlasting, unfailing love be yours in abundance.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
