Genesis 37:5 (KJV) ~ And Joseph dreamed a dream.

When Joseph dreamed his dream, in his excitement, he told all his brothers. But the Bible says in Genesis 37:5 (KJV), “And they hated him yet the more.” Joseph never let his dream die, and he never gave up. Even though he faced personal heartache, he kept his dream alive inside and believed in his dream until it came true.

Edwin Markham (1852–1940), an American poet once said, “Ah, great it is to believe the dream as we stand in youth by the starry stream; but a greater thing is to fight life through and say at the end, the dream is true!

There is a talent competition known as Britain’s Got Talent. On April 11th, 2009, a woman named Susan Boyle sang a song called, “I Dreamed a Dream”, from the musical Les Miserables. At the beginning of her audition, some of the audience laughed at her dream to be professional singer. Some even shook their heads and shouted touts of disapproval, that this woman, aged 47 years young, would even dare say she wanted to be a professional singer. Even the judges were skeptical of her talent.

As the music was cued, the first notes of the song filled the auditorium. There came a hush over audience as the music played, and Susan began to sing. Her voice filled the room, pitch perfect, with every note, to the astonishment of everyone. The audience arose as, one man, to their feet cheering. One of the judges said to Susan Boyle after she had finished her audition, “Without a doubt, that was the biggest surprise I have had in three years of the show. When you stood there and said, ‘I wanted to be like Elaine Page’, everyone laughed at you. No one is laughing now. That was stunning; an incredible performance.” Susan did not win the competition, but won the heart of everyone, worldwide.

Dare to step out of the comfort zone of your own personal life into a whole new world. When dare to step out, we may face the touts of disapproval, the shaking of people heads and the frown of scorn. The Bible says in Proverbs 26:13 (KJV), “The slothful man saith, ‘There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.” So he never goes out, nor does he do anything. His dreams are broken and beaten before he ever steps out of his house. Shake off all the things that would stop you from even taking that first step forward to “dream your dream”.  Cast aside your fears or your fears will defeat you before you even get started, and you will never achieve your dreams.

My friend, initially it may take a bit of courage to believe in your dream. It starts inside of each and every one of us; it is birthed by seeds of greatness. If we, but only, water them and allow them to grow, then who knows what we could achieve. As the lyrics of a song say, “You can have miracles when you believe.” Keep believing in your dream, for the Bible says in Psalm 37:4 (NIV), “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Our text from today is from Genesis 37:5 (KJV),And Joseph dreamed a dream.” I encourage you to dream a dream, to put your dream into action, to step out of your comfort zone and take that step of faith, so your dreams may come true.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.

  1. Good stuff Matthew!

  2. Friends, let’s be mindful that when we talk about dreams, achievements and aiming for something, it is not the same as the materialistic world’s view. Even those of us who feel we are mediocre fit into God’s plan. For some of us it is the smallest of things that others take for granted, like growing in confidence to smile at people and say hello. It can start with holding doors open, moving on to acknowledging their thanks. Bite sized chunks. I don’t want to climb mountains and I am no Billy Graham but with God’s help we can all find our slot, even if it is a paper thin one. Be true to yourself and delight in the Lord. Much love to you all, Mandy
