Hebrews 10:24 (NIV) ~ …and let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds.

The word “spur” is only mentioned once in Scripture and it means to encourage, to simulate, to stir up or to provoke someone in a Godly way towards love and good works; to find new and inventive way in which to inspire others to follow Jesus.

When I was a young boy at school my Teacher would find new and inventive ways in which to teach me the lessons, she made learning fun and exciting. When she taught you something new you had to find a way in which to put it into practice. Learning new things about Jesus and His Living word should be fun and exciting. Even more so, is to put what you have leaned into practice. Stir yourself up in the most holy faith so you may stir others on in this great adventure of faith in God.

The word “spur” has my imagination running wild, for when I think of the word “spur” my mind takes me to the old western movies, when the cowboys wore spurs upon their boots. They would encourage the horses to go forward and go faster.

Steven Curtis Chapman and Geoff Moore wrote to the song, “The Great Adventure” with these stirring lyrics:

Saddle up your horses; we’ve a trail to blaze,

Through the wild blue yonder of God’s amazing grace,

Let’s follow our Leader into the glorious unknown,

This is a life like no other, this is the great adventure.

My friend, saddle up your horses and put your spurs on to go farther and faster than you have ever gone before. Live life without limits and find new and exciting ways in which to learn more about Jesus and share your faith by your good works done in His name as our text for today says in Hebrews 10:24 (NIV), “…and let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds.”

God bless you my friend, Matthew.

  1. A fresh thing struck me about this familiar verse – that we should be spurring our brothers and sisters on,- not leaving it all to God – and not necessarily spurring ourselves on. How hard it is sometimes when you know you need a good kick to get going, or to keep going but you can’t seem to get the motivation alone. It actually takes very little effort to follow this direction – a few words of praise and encouragement are the key I think. Lets untie those horses and get out there! Cheers Matthew for your gift of thought provoking words. Always appreciated.
