Jeremiah 17:7 (NIV) ~ “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”

What is confidence? The Hebrew word for confidence is mibtah, meaning, “security, trust, reliance and hope”. In addition, the Greek word for confidence is pethio, meaning, “to convince, persuaded, confident of, encouraged, sure and won over”. The dictionary also says this about the word confident, “confidence; to have trust in a trustful relationship, self-assurance, to have self-belief in one’s own abilities, to have or show certainty, to be sure of oneself.” Our text for today says in Jeremiah 17:7 (NIV) ~ “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.” To have confidence in God’s covenant relationship with you is to lean upon His power.

Some people may interpret someone having confidence, as someone who has a swagger about them, who can come across as one who is full of arrogance and aloof. They may also interpret boldness, being valiant, fearlessness and daring in a person, as someone who is so full of themselves. Furthermore, if you are truthful, there are times when you are not that confident. Perhaps it is because you have had your confidence dashed upon the hard rocks of disappointment and broken dreams. You even lack confidence in the way you look, and you have wished you could change something about your appearance, and at times, you even find it hard to accept and love yourself in a positive way, let alone truly love someone in the Lord.

You have even wished you could be a little more bolder and have just a little bit more confidence. Or you have even wished you could grow in confidence, and courage. You have looked at people as they do things for God, and said in your heart, “I wish I had their confidence to do that, or to get up and sing, or to take part in the meeting, or to stand up and give a testimony for the Lord.” Maybe you yearn to be able to take that step of faith and cross the threshold into moving in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps you wish you had the confidence to tell people about Jesus. It may even be something such as longing to have the confidence to go for a promotion at work, or to have the confidence to stand up and be tall, or to have the confidence to take a test and pass it. The Bible says in Psalm 40:4 (DARBY),Blessed is the man that hath made Jehovah his confidence.” The Bible also says in 1 John 5:14 (NIV), “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” Not only does He hear you but He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, more than you could ever ask or imagine, because your God is an awesome God. Moreover your confidence comes from the Lord, it is through Him that you become an overcome and someone who is more than a conquer.

It is from the Lord that you draw your strength. It is from the Lord that you grow in confidence and it from the Lord that you have your assurance, and your belief to be bold through the power of His Holy Spirit, to be His witness. When you learn to accept and love yourself as God loves you, you will find rest in His perfect, pure and peaceful love. It is because of Jesus, that you can rise up and be strong and walk tall, be daring and fearless in your faith, slaying every giant before you, overcoming every obstacle which stands before you. Believe in Him, put your hope in Him and in His confidence you can go for that promotion, pass that test, rise up and instead of being a just a pew-filler, be a participator in the power of His Holy Spirit for the Kingdom of God.

My friend, the Bible says in Philippians 1:6 (NIV), “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” God is working with you every day to help you grow in confidence, and to help you believe in His magnificent power in you, so you may have a rock solid belief, not in your own abilities, but in His abilities in you. As our text for today says in Jeremiah 17:7 (NIV),But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.” In Him, you will never be disappointed or feel let down. In Him, you will grow in boldness, grow in confidence, grow in grace, and grow in His love. In Him you will be more confident in your everyday life as you learn to trust God more, and rise up and be the giant slayer that you are inside, because of God. You can be an awesome effective and the powerful witness for the Lord when you share your testimony because your confidence is in Him. Furthermore, you can draw strength from Him daily. You too can adopt Paul’s faith-filled language from Philippians 4:13 (NIV), “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength”…because my confidence is in the LORD.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
