The Lord of the breakthrough.

Monday  4 ~ Bible reading 2 Samuel 5: 17 to 25 (NKJV)

Our Bible reading starts off with this statement, “Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold.”

When the enemy hears that you have given your heart to the Lord Jesus and you have made that quality decision to follow Him with all your heart, the enemy will try and come after you to destroy what you have in Christ Jesus.

But notice what David did in response to this, “He went to the stronghold.”

He went to the Lord his God and found refuge and strength.

How many people know that when you give your life to Jesus you will enter into the biggest battle field of your life.

But the Bible says in John 16:33 (NIV) In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

He who has the Son has life, if you don’t have Jesus you are dead and don’t know it.

Thank God he reached down and found my hiding place, washed me in His blood and sanctified me holy, He put a robe of righteousness on me and put my name in the Lambs book of Life.

This was the first battle of David’s life since he became king.

So how did he handle it? He went to God in prayer.

Oh how the old hymn comes rushing back to me at times like this:

What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief’s to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

David took his circumstance to God in prayer and he waited for God to give him direction.

David did not take things into his own hand and hope for the best, but he took things to God in prayer and got the best solution in how to deal with the situation.

When things look difficult and you don’t know which way to turn, take it to the Lord in prayer, for God will make a way where there seems to be no way.

Did you know that some people can talk like warriors yet walk like wimps.

The difference between David and other people is that David rose up and did something rather than nothing.

Quote ~ Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States once said, “The only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing and be nothing. Criticism is part of the price paid for leaping past mediocrity.”

Be strong in the Lord, put on the whole armor of the Lord, for you’re in the army of the Lord, and his truth is marching on.

His power is marching on, His people are marching on.

Quote ~ The American Baseball player, Babe Ruth once said, “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.”

Keep going on, March on my soul be strong in the Lord, and power of His mighty strength.

Story ~ I once read a story by Mary Mapes Dodge (1831 to 1905) called The Legend of Hans Brinker.

The children’s book tells the story of a young boy who saw a leak in a dam and put his finger in the hole to stop the dam from bursting and thus flooding the villages.

The story goes that he stayed there all night until help arrived in the morning.

Now picture this if you will, you have prayed to the Lord for your breakthrough and the Devil is standing with his finger in the hole trying to stop the answer coming through to you.

However, the more you keep believing and praying, and the more you keep trusting and obeying the Lord, the more holes will start to appear in that dam.

One by one another hole appears, and another one, then another one, then one more, and before you know it, holes are appearing all over the wall, and very soon the dam that the Devil has tried to built up against you from receiving God’s blessing and his answer to your prayers will burst open.

Just as our text for today says in 2 Samuel 5: 20 “So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.

The place Baal Perazim means “The Lord who breaks out”, in other words, He is the Lord of the breakthrough.

How awesome is our Bible reading for today, how powerful is this word from God for your life and your situation right now?

Listen to what God is saying from 2 Samuel 5:20 “As waters break out, the LORD has broken out against my enemies before me.”

Can you imagine a flood of God’s power raining down from heaven as a mighty monsoon-deluge.

The windows of heaven will burst open as God’s blessing will not just trickle out, but burst out, like the breaking forth of waters, and so will his blessing be unto you.

Your answer will come!

Suddenly, your breakthrough will come and the enemy will be swept away, for God will be unto you “The Lord of the Breakthrough.”

Now that is me half way through my notes for tonight.

You would think that after the enemy was defeated that he would leave David alone, but no.

Even when the enemy decided to attack David a second time, David went once more to the Lord.

Take everything to God in prayer, because He is interested in every little detail of your life.

This time when David sought the Lord, God gave him a different plan.

2 Samuel 5:23 to 24 The Lord, said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, and then you shall advance quickly. For then the Lord will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”

Just as before, David had the direction and leading from God, or to put another way, using a good old fashioned gospel word, David had an unction from God.

The word ‘Unction’ in the Greek is the word Chrisma, meaning a spiritual fervor, an anointing from the Holy Spirit to guide you to do God’s will.

This time David had to wait and listen for a sound from heaven.

Story ~ Story ~ Back when the telegraph was the fastest method of long-distance communication, a young man applied for a job as a Morse Code operator.

Answering an ad in the newspaper, he went to the office address that was listed. When he arrived, he entered a large, busy office filled with noise and clatter, including the sound of the telegraph in the background.

A sign on the receptionist’s counter instructed job applicants to fill out a form and wait until they were summoned to enter the inner office. The young man filled out his form and sat down with the seven other applicants in the waiting area.

After a few minutes, the young man stood up, crossed the room to the door of the inner office, and walked right in. Naturally the other applicants perked up, wondering what was going on. They muttered among themselves that they hadn’t heard any summons yet. They assumed that the young man who went into the office made a mistake and would be disqualified.

Within a few minutes, however, the employer escorted the young man out of the office and said to the other applicants, “Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming, but the job has just been filled.”

The other applicants began grumbling to each other, and one spoke up saying, “Wait a minute, I don’t understand. He was the last to come in, and we never even got a chance to be interviewed. Yet he got the job. That’s not fair!”

The employer said, “I’m sorry, but all the time you’ve been sitting here, the telegraph has been ticking out the following message in Morse Code: ‘If you understand this message, then come right in. The job is yours.’ None of you heard it or understood it. This young man did. The job is his.”

We live in a world that is full of busyness and clatter, like that office. People are distracted and unable to hear the still, small voice of God.

Can you hear the messages from God?

Real spiritual people truly hear from heaven and can determine what is of God and what is not.

They know the voice of the Holy Spirit, and can discern the difference between the wind in the trees and the moving of God, they can hear the sound of marching.

Just like Elijah who heard the sound of rain before it came.

Take time to tune your ear to heaven and listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit, and hear the sound of rain, hear the sound of the marching in the mulberry trees, and hear the sound of victory before it happens.

The sound in the mulberry trees is the sweet sound of victory to every believer.

The wind of the Holy Spirit going before you in power.

When you hear the sound, then stir yourself up from your slumber, rise from your knees in prayer and go out to war.

For your God is an awesome God, who has gone before you.

He has prepared the way for you to walk in victory.

Take everything before the Lord in prayer.

Ask His guidance, seek His will and walk in His ways.

David took the fight to the enemy, under the anointing of God and in His authority and power and won a great victory.

Notice if you will the wording from Scripture, “The sound of marching.”

What makes the sound of marching? It is an army.

It is the sound of the army of the Lord.

I hear the sound of the army of the Lord,

I hear the sound of the army of the Lord,

It’s a sound of praise; it’s a sound of war,

The army of the Lord, the army of the Lord,

The army of the Lord is marching on.

Now quickly onto my last point:

The Bible says in 2 Samuel 5:24 “Advance quickly.”

Or as the NIV Bible says, “move quickly.”

There is an old saying, “Strike when the iron is hot.”

Act upon the word of God now!

If you have gone to God in prayer and received an answer and direction in which to go, then act upon it now.

Do not procrastinate, do not linger, this is your God given opportunity to do it now.

When an alter call is given act upon it now, don’t wait until you get home and say, “I wish I had gone forward in the meeting for prayer.”

Act now, do it quickly.

When the anointing of God is here in the church, I urge you to response when the anointing of God is upon a meeting.

What kind of breakthrough do you need in your life today?

Whatever it may be, know that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly more than you can ever ask or imagine.

The devil has been holding back your blessings for far too long, now is your time for a breakthrough, now it is time for your victory.

Now is the time for the blessings and answer to prayer to burst forth like the break-through of water.

If God can do it for David and be unto him, “The Lord of the breakthrough,” He can surely do it for you too.
