1 Samuel 16:13 (NIV) ~ “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power.”

This verse tells us that Samuel used a horn. The Hebrew word for horn is, Qeren, symbolizing strength and status. We also see that Samuel used anointing oil, (Hebrew word is Misha) sacred oil for dedicating and divine empowering from on high.

By this task, Samuel was saying in front of everyone, God is ordaining this man to serve, God is pouring into his life His strength, His powerful anointing, and He is giving David a status, he is set apart to serve God.

Anointing oil was only used by the Priests, as it was specially prepared, and was only used on special occasions. Oil has many different purposes. It is made from only the best olive trees that produce the purest olive oil. It can be used as a healing oil, it can be used to burn in an oil lamp for fire, and it can also be used in wine, wine that refreshes. It also has a unique aroma, and a very sweet pleasant smell.

In Psalm 133:2 (NIV) it says, “It is like the precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes.” The anointing oil flows from above, to first of all, anoint the head, then flows down on our body.

Oil in the Old Testament symbolized the Holy Spirit. He would be poured from above onto someone, and He would bring healing, and fire that would burn with a passion for the things of God. The sweet, pleasant, pure aroma would fill that person’s life. The Holy Spirit would bring refreshing, and confirm the calling of God upon the person’s life.

In our text for today, 1 Samuel 16:13 (NIV),So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power.” He anointed David publicly, and he was ordained in front of people, for that purpose to which God was calling him. The precious oil of the Holy Spirit was poured upon him from on high. You can just imagine it running down from his head and his face, then his clothes, and down past his heart. Everyone could smell the sweet, pleasant aroma. The Bible says in Psalm 89:20 (KJV), “I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him.”

The next thing we read about David is that he was serving. God has called us all to serve. From our service unto the Lord comes our devotion to Him. The next account we see of David, is when he is fighting Goliath in the anointing power of the Holy Spirit. David won a great legendary fight, and overcame in the power of the Holy Spirit.

My friend, God wants us all to receive the anointing for the Holy Spirit, and to empower us from on high, with His strength and power to serve. Let the lord pour His horn of Salvation over our lives, let it pour upon our head, over our heart and change our life.

The Bible says in James 5:14 (NIV), “Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.”
Let God anoint you with the oil of gladness, let him fill you with power from on high, let Him fill you with the sweet aroma of the Lord, and set you apart to serve Him. Let the refreshing oil of the Holy Spirit be poured upon your life today. May He pour over every part of your life, from head to toe, in the anointing of His Holy Spirit.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
