Luke 10:20 (NIV) ~ However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

This verse puts everything in perspective and it gives the disciples a wakeup call to what is really important. The authority that God gives you through the name of Jesus Christ is superseded by His gift of salvation. Many times people can get carried away with their authority in Christ Jesus as well as signs, wonders and moving in the miraculous. Yet, Jesus nails it right here! If you are going to get excited about anything, then get excited that your name is written in heaven! Get excited about all your sins being forgiven and washed away by His precious blood!

The Bible says in Philippians 3:8 (NIV), “What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour.

Can’t you just feel the raw exuberant joy bursting out of Jesus like a dam bursting open; nothing can contain His joy! The Bible says in Luke 10:21 (NIV),  “At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.’”

In other words, Jesus was saying, “I praise you, Father, because you have revealed to your little children the joy there is in knowing that their names are written in heaven.”

My friend, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Are all your sins washed away by His precious blood? Is your name written in heaven? If your name is written in heaven, then you have something to be joyful about.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.

  1. Thank you Matthew. Too many distractions (busyness of work, schooling, social interactions etc.) in this world keep us (me) from recognizing the Truth of Christ being the Redeeming Freedom that it is. Thank you for your devotions. Your friend,David Barr

A child is not likely to find a father in God unless he finds something from God in his father.

  2. I have often wanted to be wise but this really shows that heaven requires no intellectual capacity or effort. Only the ability to acknowledge God’s great gift and let it warm you from inside. Slowly you feel yourself thaw, and you can relive the childlike feeling that is joy. It is a big feeling and can blot out all kinds of horrible things – preoccupation with the worries of this world. Can I pay the bills? Does she really love me? Is that headache something serious? If you suddenly became convinced that all these fears were allayed, the feeling would be nice but nothing like the enormous, all-surpassing joy of knowing your name is there where it belongs.
