Hebrews 6:19 (NIV) ~ We have an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

Here is a fascinating fact: every government has a special seal of authenticity placed upon an anchor, they even have a unique apparatus to test such an item. Each anchor has to pass several tests to make sure it is dependable, then and only then will it be stamped with a seal of approval. So when someone buys such anchor for their boat or ship, they have a full assurance that the anchor will hold.
Jesus was “made perfect through suffering.”  Upon Him the Father has placed His seal of approval. “Oh, blessed a assurance Jesus is mine.”  He is the anchor for my soul steadfast and sure, whose hold on me will never fail; He will never let go of my hand.
A ship that is not at anchor will be easy prey for the first gust of wind which blows against its hull. However, an anchor which is steadfast upon the rock, will not be dragged here or there, and the ship will not be blown in every direction, but will be held firm. Even though the roaring of the winds and size of the waves come crashing with such animosity against you, fear not! For you have a Savior who has said, “In the world you will have trouble, but take heart for I have overcome the world.”
Be not complacent and do not take for granted your position in Christ, for familiarity breeds contempt. Do leave yourself open to such a perilous position, but stay close to God at all times, keep your anchor firmly upon the Rock which cannot move.

In the words of an old gospel song written by Edward Mote:

In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the vile.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand, all around is sinking sand.
As surely as every anchored ship feels the strain of the wind coming upon it, and then swiftly turns to meet it head on, so then, the soul which trusts in Christ, turns to meet every challenge not in their strength alone, but in His. All who trust in Christ can face each and every challenge with the blessed hope, and in full assurance, that when they resist the devil, he will flee from them.
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 12:9 to 10 (NIV). “He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Therefore, when I am buffeted by waves, and such wild winds and violent storms of life, I have an anchor for the soul, safe and secure in the Savior’s love. When you lean upon Him during these times, your hold upon Him will grow with ever-increasing faith and it will affect the intensity of your grip upon the Rock of ages. When the anchor has been cast into good ground, it sinks down and the heavier the strain, the deeper and firmer the hold. As the winds and currents increase with violence, the anchor bites even more deeply into the solid ground and so increases its preserving power. It is thus with a trusting soul that when trials, temptations and times of testing come against you, that instead of driving you away, will draw you deeper into the loving tender arms of your Redeemer, who is strong to deliver and mighty to save.  So, as the Bible says in James 1:2 to 4 (NIV), “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
There is a spiritual lesson which is seldom taught, that those who have passed through such shortcomings and times of great trials, are much stronger in their faith than those who have never endured such opposition from the enemy and always sailed on a smooth sea. For they have a faith more valuable than gold and silver, and more precious than any other gem stone this world may afford, for their faith is crowned with heavenly treasures.

My friend, never fear, for when the enemy comes in like flood the Lord will raise up a stand against him the standard of the Rock of Ages, who can never be moved, upon which your anchor is set steadfast and sure. Furthermore, when those who do not have a such a hope, such an anchor, are blown away and their boat is shipwrecked upon the sandbars and rocks of life, while you will be there standing firm, standing tall with a testimony to share, so powerful, so awesome that it will bring glory to God. For you have an anchor for the soul, firm and secure, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.

God bless you my friend,

Matthew.

  1. Thank you for the powerful reminder that we have an anchor for our souls even in the midst of trials and tribulations of many kinds. This is especially poignant in the aftermath of the tragedy in Boston. May God give great peace and assurance to the believers there and remind them that they are not forsaken. And, may many turn to Him who never have before. Many blessings
