Psalm 63:6 (NIV) ~ On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.

This was written during David’s time in the Desert of Judah. When the stress of the day weighs heavy upon your shoulders and you feel as if you are going through a desert experience, and you’re on your bed at night, remember the Lord. Let his comfort and his peace cause you to rest, rather than toss and turn all night. Remember the Lord’s goodness, mercy, love and grace. Remember His faithfulness, His kindness to you; remember how the Lord has brought you safe thus far.

Have you ever had night when you have been restless and constantly glancing at the alarm clock, thinking to yourself, “Will I ever get to sleep tonight?” You change position and try and get into a comfy spot, only to raise your head and look once again at the alarm clock. You start to think about all sorts of situations, and in your mind you rehearse scenarios over and over, then you change position again to try and get another comfy spot to try and fall asleep for the umpteenth time. The Bible says in Psalm 4:4 (NIV). “When you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.” Instead of thinking upon things that rile you up and steal your peace, do as David did, and think upon the Lord through the watches of the night. Let His peace wash over your soul and give you rest.

Joseph Scriven once wrote:

Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer.

My friend, as you rest your head upon your pillow at night, may the word of God speak so sweetly to your soul from Proverbs 3: 24 (NIV), “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” The Bible also says in Psalm 4:8 (NIV), “I will lie down and sleep in peace.” So when you’re on your bed at night, pray for His peace and softy meditate on the blessing, goodness and faithfulness of the Lord, and if you do wake up, then do as our text for today says in Psalm 63:6 (NIV), “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.” Then, you will soon lie down and sleep in blissful rest in Jesus.

God bless, your friend in Matthew.
