Ruth 1:21 (NIV) ~ I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty.

Is this the cry of every parent’s heavy heart when the children take the car out for a drive with a full tank of petrol (gas), “My child, you went away full but came back empty?” How many mistakes does it take to see you have followed a wrong road and you are not where God wants you to be? Naomi (meaning pleasant, lovely and delightful) left Bethlehem in Judah because there was famine in the land, so instead of trusting God she went somewhere else. Now, two gravesides later after losing her two sons, Mahlon (meaning weak and sickly) and Kilion (meaning failing and pining), Naomi heads back to Bethlehem and no longer wishes people to call her by her name, because of all the hardships, pain, loss and suffering, she now wants people to call her Mara meaning “bitter”.

Bethlehem is called the “house of bread”. It is God’s desire to feed you and provide for you, but how can God continue to bless your life if you walk away from Him? He fills you with all that heaven can give you; He fills your life with the fruits of heaven, but when you walk away from the house of bread you will begin to get spiritually hungry, weak, sickly in spirit and you will find your walk with God failing, yet inside your heart you will be pinning to be back within the house of bread.

Notice if you will, the strong testimony from Naomi in our text for today in Ruth 1:21 (NIV), “I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty.” She testifies that her life was once full, even though there was a famine in the land God still provided. She did not have to walk away from God, for God is a faithful God. Even in the low tide of blessing He is still faithful, He is mighty to save and strong to deliver.

Many people will only stick around when the tide of blessing is overflowing in their lives, but run away when the tide is low and come back empty, and even try to blame God. God is not to blame for someone walking away from Him. If you feel far away from God today, then guess who moved? Come back to the house of bread; come back to the LORD right now. How many more graveyard mounts of disappointment must it take for you to realize you are not in the place where God wants you to be?

My friend, when Naomi came back to the house of bread God blessed her and her family with handfuls of blessing on purpose. He provided a kinsman-redeemer to cover them with His protection, provision and peace, with not one guilt trip or disapproving attitude. Naomi kept her name and testified to the goodness and faithfulness of God over her life; once again she was pleasant, lovely and delightful with the blessing of the Lord. When you come back to the house of bread there are no guilt trips of condemnation only acceptance and love, for when your Kinsman-Redeemer covers you with His blood, His protection, providence and peace, you are instantly forgiven, instantly given a new start and instantly given handfuls of His blessing on purpose, because of His great love for you. Once again you will be filled with His fullness for your life.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
