James 5:16 (NIV) ~ The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

He could sleep no longer as he gazed at the alarm clock; the time displayed was 4:27 a.m.. So he got out of bed and fell on his knees in prayer with his arms draped over the top of his bed and his head buried on the mattress. With tears slowly rolling down his face, he cried out in exasperation, “Oh, God, please help me.”  “Oh, God, where are you? I need your help,”  came his cry once again. For the past few weeks he had gone through one of the most difficult times in his life; he had almost felt like giving up. Just then, unbeknownst to him, several demons had gathered outside of his window staring in glee and mocking him because of his circumstances. However, they were soon put to flight when from in front of the man an angel of the LORD appeared. He was over ten feet tall, he was shining with the brilliance of the sun, and in his right hand he held a drawn sword as if guarding the man. With an evil shriek that would send shivers down the spine of the fearful, the demons fled in terror at the sight. The room was soon filled with other angels who ministered to the man. The man, who was unaware of what was going on around him in the spirit world, suddenly felt a great sense of peace, and felt as if a hand was gently placed upon his head. Within his heart he heard the voice of the Holy Spirit say to him, “Read Isaiah 41 verses 9 to 10.” The man reached over for his Bible which was on his side-board next to his bed. Even through he knew these verses by heart, he was obedient to the voice of the Holy Spirit. As he opened his Bible at the chapter and verse and began to read the Scriptures, which said, “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” With that, the man closed his eyes and said, “Thank you LORD, I needed to hear that today, thank you Holy Spirit.” Then, the man rose to his feet, got washed, changed and dressed and then went to church to share the gospel with those in his congregation.

That morning, he arrived earlier than usual and was surprised to see an elderly couple sitting in their usual seats. The elderly man beckoned the Pastor over to where they were sitting and asked, “Pastor, may we have a few minutes of your time?” The Pastor said, “Yes, of course you can.” The woman said, “Well, I just want you to know every morning for the past few weeks we have been praying for you. We have been asking God to protect you and help you and for His angels to fight for you. We both know God has called you and we both want you to know we love you and appreciate you as our Pastor. But, something strange happened this morning. We both felt as if someone had gently awakened us and told us to pray for you. So, we started to pray for you about 4:15 a.m. this morning. At that, the pastor leaned forward as if hanging on their very words. “Well, Pastor,” the woman continued, taking a deep breath and looking to her husband who nodded to her in approval, “as we prayed for you this morning, we believe there was a great victory won, we both saw an angel of God standing over you with his sword drawn, fighting for you.” The pastor sat there in the seat and could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, for on the way to church he felt as if God had intervened and brought a mighty breakthrough. He thanked the couple and prayed for them and then welcomed the others who were coming into the church.

Later, as he went to the pulpit to preach, he knew that, that day God had laid aside his fears and strengthened him. His earlier feelings of inadequacy and inferiority had gone, the fear of failing had dissolved like the snow as if the brightness of the Sun had shone on it. God had once again reaffirmed His calling for the man to be a pastor and the man had now clothed himself with a new sense of purpose and power to serve God.

My friend, when you pray for someone you may never know what kind of effect your prayers may have. When God calls you to pray for someone he does so because He trusts you as a faithful servant to do so. You may never know what personal battles people may face, but God knows. Sometimes, God may ask you to pray for someone in another country who, in the natural, may be thousands of miles away or even may be only a few miles away, yet there is no distance in the spirit world. God is omnipresent and an omnipotent God who will send His angels to fight for, and minister to, those who inherit salvation. Your prayers have eternal meaning and unlimited power when prayed and directed by God through the Holy Sprit. Never underestimate the power of prayer and how it can minister to others for whom you are praying, for as our text for today says in James 5:16 (NIV), “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” So, as you pray, your prayers are powerful and effective and will have a mighty impact upon someone’s life.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.

  1. We need righteous people to pray for marriages and families. Satan is attacking and destroying even Christian marriages. We have got to wake up and pay more attention to our own marriages and those of the people around us.
