Matthew 1:19 (NIV), “Because Joseph was a righteous man.”

Joseph in the Bible is, in my eyes, an overlooked and unrecognised man of God. He came from the line of David (whose descendents were kings) and married a woman, named Mary, who came from the line of Aaron (whose descendents were priests). Therefore, Jesus was born from the lineage of a king and a priest. It was the marrying of two, to become one. It is very clear that Joseph loved Mary, and cared for her, and the family which they had together after Jesus was born, for the Bible says in Mark 6:3 (NIV), “Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?”

The Bible says in Matthew 1:20 to 21 (NIV), “An angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream saying, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’”

Notice, if you will, the willing obedience of Joseph to the word from God in Matthew 1:24 (NIV), “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”

In one sense, Jesus was adopted by Joseph, and he loved him as his own. By taking care of the family needs and working as a carpenter, Joseph also took time to teach Jesus a working trade as a carpenter. He took the lead role, as the head of the household, as the spiritual priest over his family.

Four times in the book of Matthew, we read about the angel talking to Joseph in a dream. Matthew 1:20, 2:13, 2:19 and 2:22. On each occasion, Joseph got up immediately and obeyed the Lord’s direction.

Can you imagine, Joseph sleeping, and while he sleeps an angel of the Lord appears to him, telling him what the next step to take is, and why. Then Joseph, waking up and telling Mary, “We have to leave now, because God has spoken to me in a dream.” This was simple obedience to the word from the Lord.

In the book of Luke, we find evidence that Joseph knew and understood the ordinances of the Lord. He knew about covenant practises that God had passed on to the people from Moses. So he circumcised Jesus on the eighth day (Lev 12:3). Then both Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem to present Jesus before the Lord, for Jesus to be consecrated unto the Lord (Exodus 13:1). It was when they arrived there, that they made an offering to the Lord of two pair of doves (Lev 12:8). This was done because they were not wealthy. Furthermore, they would travel as a family to Jerusalem every year for the Passover feast. They had a lifestyle where following the ways of the Lord was an integral part of their life.

My friend, men everywhere must rise up and take hold of the role of being a good husband, and father to their children. May the man of the house rise up and take the lead role within a covenant marriage, to cover their family in prayer, and to follow the Lord, to be found in the house of God. May men learn to take hold of the word of God, and with simple obedience, follow His lead. Moreover, may woman, with a loving, caring, covenant marriage, be like Mary, and with a faithful obedience to God, follow their righteous husband’s lead in the Lord. May it cause our spiritual DNA to bring us to place where following the ways of the Lord is the most important of our lifestyle.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
