Judges 18:28 (NIV) ~ There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else.

The people of Laish lived on their own and they had no relationship with anyone else. They thought they could be self-sufficient and have no need of fellowship with the people of God. They found out, to their peril, how wrong they were to believe such a foolish thing. The simple strategy of the enemy is to divide and conquer, which is the complete opposite to God’s strategy. His strategy is to have fellowship one with another, so when you have times of trouble, or when the enemy attacks you, you will have the body of believers to come to your aide to help you win the victory through prayerful and practical support of the family of God.

John Donne (1572-1631), a Jacobean poet and preacher is credited with the line, “No man is an island.”

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Many people act like an island unto themselves; however the truth is people need people. When you cut yourself off and preoccupy yourself with self-preservation and an attitude that says, “No one matters, neither do I care for anyone,” you become easy pickings for the enemy of souls. For you have cut off all fellowship and are like a boat out on a sea of selfishness, just drifting without anyone to help. Just like the people of Laish who had no relationship with anyone else, in their blindness of pride they thought they never needed anyone, they thought they had it all. However, when they were least expecting it, the enemy swooped down upon them, and having no one to help because they had cut all relations with other people, they were easily defeated.

My friend, fellowship is so important, it is from being in fellowship one with another that we meet together and are refreshed. We also find support, encouragement and a covering of prayer in Christ Jesus. When we fellowship with other believers, we discover acceptance and love in His name, and we find opportunities to become an active part of the body of believers—this is what God has intended for you. The people of Laish had no relationship with anyone else therefore, when the day of trouble came and the enemy attacked them, there was no one to help them. Not so for those who keep themselves in fellowship with one another in the LORD. There is nothing to be gained from cutting yourself off and being an island unto yourself, come in from the cold and warm yourself by the Holy Spirit’s fire of fellowship, and let us grow together, fellowship together, build together, cover each other in prayer and join together in everyday, edify each other with kingdom living and fellowship in Christ Jesus.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
