1 Peter 2:2 (NIV) ~ Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.

Discipleship is not a subject that should be taken lightly, it is an awesome responsibility. Here, the Bible paints the picture with words in describing new Christians as, “newborn babies.” I can recall, with great fondness, the day my son came home from hospital. I brought him into the living room in the baby carry seat, put him down in the middle of the room, where both mummy and daddy looked at each other and said, “So what do we do now?”

You see, during the birth, people would help you with this and that. So much effort went into the care before the birth, but no one put much thought into the aftercare when the baby was born.

We are not called to just make decisions, but disciples. It not about putting your hand up in a church meeting, but rather, it is a life-changing commitment to Jesus Christ. There should be just as much care going into helping someone after they come to Jesus Christ as there is put into helping them make that life-changing commitment.

When a newborn babe in Christ comes into the kingdom, they do not know right away about how to pray, or how to intercede for the lost. They do not know about all the things of the Holy Spirit or what book of the Bible to read first, or how many chapters to read a day, or even the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It all takes time and we cannot expect someone who has just received Jesus as his or her Saviour to want to know all about the Bible in one day, it all takes time in discipleship.

There is a great joy when a newborn baby is born, and there is a great fuss made over them; they are made to feel wanted and loved. Likewise, every newborn believer should be made to feel wanted and loved. They should be fed things that will help them mature and grow up in their Salvation, to be strong in their faith. If I were a body builder I would not go for the heaviest weight first, but build myself up gradually. So it is with newborn babes in Christ Jesus. We are called to help them grow in the faith, to be faithful in everything, albeit praying, reading the Bible and being a strong witness for the Lord.

My friend, when a seed is planted it will grow if it has the right soil, the right watering and the right place. So it is with a newborn, the seed which is planted within them will grow if we help them to water it, help them to feed it and help them to spend time with the Son. Just like a newborn, we start off with the pure spiritual milk of the word of God, then progress to meatier things. Therefore, let us take up the reins of discipleship, and help a newborn babe grow in the things of the kingdom of God with the follow-up aftercare plan to help them grow in their Salvation for the glory of God.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
