2 Corinthians 10:10 (NIV) ~ For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.”

The Apostle Paul was a small man in stature, a bit like Zacchaeus. Paul is also described as having very little hair and his legs bent outward, yet he never once let these things deter him from serving God. Can you imagine what kind of reaction he received when he first met people? Notice, if you will, from our text for today, the impression that certain people had of the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 10:10 (NIV), “For some say, ‘His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.’

The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV), “The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” I am always amazed how God will use imperfect people to preach His perfect gospel. Even while you and I are under construction we can be used mightily of God to do His will. For nobody is perfect, regardless of age, height, or gender, neither small nor great, yet God is. Whoever God calls He anoints, He appoints and He equips, for the Bible says in Ephesians 2:10 (NIV), “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Don’t let other people put you off from serving God because you do not have the looks or figure of a super model, or you do not dress in designer clothes, or you do not have a finely-toned athletic body or you do not have great oratory skills, or a flowing encyclopaedia of knowledge. Rather, be dressed in God with His garments of glory and let the Holy Spirit guide you and give you the right words to say at the right time. Moses had a stutter, Jacob had a limp, Gideon felt inferior, David had depression and Paul was unimpressive in appearance yet, they all served God who turned their weakness into strength. Go with what you have in God and let God do the rest.

My friend, the Apostle Paul never once let any negative comments from people put him off from serving God. Even when Paul had the marks on his body from the effects of being chained up, whipped and beaten, when with all the strength he could muster he got up and kept going regardless of his physical appearance, he found strength in the LORD his God. Paul was filled with the glory of God, and he was filled the fire and power of the Holy Spirit.

Never let anyone put you off from serving God because of the way you look outwardly or because of how you dress, but rather radiate Jesus from within and let His glory shine through you to touch peoples’ lives with the powerful message of the gospel. To quote a line from a famous song, “It is no secret what God can do, what He’s done for others He’ll do for you.” Go with what you have in God and let God do the rest.

God bless you my friend, Matthew
