1 Corinthians 8:1 (NIV) ~ Knowledge puffs up but love builds up.

Love builds up, love edifies and love tenderly encourages. You may be an encyclopedia of knowledge, you may have great degrees or even doctorates, you may have many letters after your name, but if you have not love you are just a clanging cymbal without a tune. To give it a modern day twist, you are puffed up; full of yourself and in essence you are nothing but an “airhead”. If your great learning has cost you courtesy or manners, but most of all love, then you have a swelled head with a shrunken heart. These may seem like harsh words, but this is what Paul was saying to the Corinthian church. The Corinthians, as well as other Greeks, loved knowledge. History tells us that they would spend endless hours in pursuit of wisdom, understanding and knowledge of just about anything. They would often gather together to debate each other; all part of their quest to know more. But with this knowledge and human understanding came cynicism and pride. Those who thought they knew more would look down on others, and sadly, this carried over into the church. And here, in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he addresses this pride and its source and reminds them that love is greater than all, and if you read into chapter 13, the last verse will tell you that “the greatest of these is love.”

Some people who are puffed up with knowledge but have not love, walk about like an old-fashioned cowboy ready to shoot anyone down with their loaded bullets of knowledge just to make themselves feel important and puffed up.

Someone once said, “No one cares much about what you know until you show them how much you care.” When you are in love with Jesus and walk in His love, the knowledge which He gives is full of the wisdom of God. His knowledge is filled with grace and it builds up and edifies people.

My friend, a heart which is full of the love and grace of God is better than a head full of puffed up ideas or selfish ego. The more you fall in love with Jesus and know Him more, and the more you grow in grace and the knowledge of Him, the more humble you become. The more you know Him, the more you will want more of Jesus to be seen and less of self. Love tenderly builds up and edifies all those who come in contact with someone who is lost in love with Jesus.

God bless you my friend, Matthew
