Amos 3:3 (NIV) ~ Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?

What a sobering question from the book of Amos. The Greek philosopher Plato once asked someone to think of a triangle and arrange the things which were in their life that they thought were to be significant and important. As you move towards the apex of the triangle, the base will get smaller and smaller leaving room for few things. Finally, when you reach the apex of the triangle there is only room for one thing. Then Plato asked the question, “What is the one thing that you hold onto after you have sacrificed all else?” If you are a Christian your answer should automatically be Jesus.

I have seen couples over the years go out with each other and walk alone together; they get married and walk alone together. He walked alone, she walked alone; they walked alone together. They never share the same passion for things of the kingdom of God, nor do they walk together. She has her own things and he has his, they never walk hand-in-hand together in God. The apex of their triangle never meets.

There is power in walking together in God. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV), “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Think of it this way: you are at one side, your spouse at the other and Jesus in the middle holding you closer together. When you walk in agreement, hand-in-hand together sharing the same vision, when everything else pales into insignificance, you will find that your trivial activities take a back seat and your focus is on serving God together. When you move closer and closer together towards serving God you will find that you are walking together in agreement towards the apex of your triangle where Jesus Christ is at the centre point. Your love for each other will no longer be based on a philos love, but you will develop an agape love from a ZOE Life which can only be found in Christ Jesus.

To walk together is not about giving up your individuality, it is about strengthening your cord of love for each other as you are woven together in prayer, sharing the same passion for the things of God, encouraging each other and building each other up in the most holy faith. God wants you to walk in agreement, to have the power of unity, the binding legal agreement with one heart and mind on things in prayer as the Bible says in Matthew 18:19 (NIV), “Again I tell you that if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.”

My friend, in our text for today, the questions is asked in Amos 3:3 (NIV), “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?” There is power in unity; the binding agreement in prayer, of walking together hand-in-hand, and of helping each other grow and mature in the things of God. When you are yoked together to plough, walking in agreement, you will work together and plough the field. If not, then you will always be pulling in different directions. To walk together is to work together, How good and pleasant it is to dwell in unity, for from there the Lord commands the blessing. When you pull together, walking together as one in agreement, you move in the same direction for the kingdom of God and great things are accomplished for the glory of the Lord.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
