2 Samuel 15: 6 (NIV) ~ Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

Just as the name Judas is synonymous with someone who is a traitor, so the name Absalom is synonymous with someone who is a betrayer – one who is drunk on wanting position and power and cares not who they betray, demean or challenged to get it. Absalom was a man who cared little for others but wanted power and position to do whatever he wanted rather than serve God under authority. He was rebellious to the things of God; he was power hungry and wanted to steal the hearts of the men of Israel.

Over the years, I have come across many a person who demonstrated the Absalom syndrome. First, they would try to woo people with their tales, and even suggest in a coy manner, “You don’t have to bother the Pastor with that, come to me.” Slowly but surely, they would try and undermine the Pastor until eventually their mask would slip and their jockeying for position within the church would be exposed. They are false teachers who tickle the listening ears of those who have no discernment. They are like vultures preying on the weak-minded and easily led. They are like slugs that leave a mess wherever they go, a trail of poison that stinks. Then those who are faithful and true to the truth are left to clear up the mess. There are too many Absalom type people in church and not enough people like David, who was a man after God’s own heart.

Some Absalom figures will float from one church to the next seeking weak-willed men and woman to conquer and build their own empire, an empire that has nothing to do with godly accountability or structure, but all to do with winning the hearts of the people against the Pastor whom God has placed over the congregation. Most of those Absalom figures are never in the one church for very long. I can remember one man who said, “I have a ministry of floating, I float from one church to another, then float to another church if I don’t get my own way. It is simply a ministry of floating.” To which I answered, “Well, to save you time, why don’t you just float off.” Ministries of floating bring nothing to a church. Such people, if they do not get their own way, will try and win the hearts of the men at the gates and like Absalom try and steal the hearts from the Pastor whom God has made a shepherd for the church. They come like wolves in sheep’s clothing, but by their fruits you will know them. It is about building the kingdom not splitting churches up by acts of blatant rebellion.

My friend, God has placed Pastors as Shepherds over God’s flock to care for them, to feed them and help them grow in God. It is high time that the church rid itself of such Absalom figures and fill the church with more men like David who served the purpose of God in his generation. Let us pray for our Pastors and support them and not give any credence to those who act like the man in our text for today in 2 Samuel 15: 6 (NIV), “Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.”

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
