Luke 24:52 (NIV) ~ Then they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

I love the way the Holy Spirit allows us to gaze upon this verse and draw something so simple, yet so deep, even for someone like me. For the Bible says in Psalm 119:130 (NIV), “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”

1  Then they worshipped Him.

What we see here is so awesome: the disciples, together in one accord, worshipping Jesus, with eyes heavenward-bound, gazing up to the Lord, with hands raised and hearts surrendered. The Messiah is the person they are worshipping; the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the Saviour of souls, the healer of the sick, the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and the coming King. They are all looking upward to Jesus and worshipping Him. There is something so beautiful when we meet together in one accorded to worship Jesus. The Bible says in Psalm 133:1 (KJV), “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” There is just something special that happens in the spiritual realm when we gather together in one accord to worship Jesus.

2  And returned to Jerusalem.

When we gather to worship Jesus together in buildings, or open air meetings, no matter where it may be, there comes a time when the meeting is over and our service begins. We then turn and go to our own “Jerusalem”, our home. It is great to gather together and worship Jesus, but when we get home let our worship unto Jesus never stop. Let our lives be an act of continual worship unto the Lord in everything we do. Sunday is foremost the day when they gather to worship and celebrate Jesus. It can be the perfect time for our lives, when we enjoy Jesus with a passion and a smile on our face, but then we have to go home to our “Jerusalem”, our neighbourhood, and our everyday lives. Our own home, work or school can be the hardest place to be a good witness, but He will help us and strengthen us to face whatever challenges might come along in our Jerusalem, so we can be a good and effective witness for the Lord.

3  With great joy.

The joy of the Lord is our strength and from His joy we draw strength. The Bible says in Psalm 144:15 (KJV), “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” They are happy, full of life and have a positive outlook on life, because their life is in Jesus Christ, for in Him we live and move and have our being. He fills us with joy in the Holy Spirit, a joy that the world can never take from us. There is genuine joy to be found in Jesus. As we worship Him, there is released within us an overflowing from the well of Life; and overflowing of joy, peace and power in Jesus. We are filled with great joy knowing that our sins are forgiven. There is great joy in knowing Jesus Christ as the Saviour of your soul. There is great joy to be found in serving Jesus, and there is great joy knowing your name is written in the Lambs Book of LIFE.

My friend, let us be like the disciples in Luke 24:52 (NIV), “Then they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.” Let us worship Him with joy in the Holy Spirit and serve Him in our “Jerusalem”, wherever it may be, for His glory.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
