John 19:34 (KJV) ~ But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

The blood symbolizes the cleansing of sin, while the water symbolizes the washing of a new birth. The blood was to wash away the sins of those who should believe in His name. The water represents that living water which is obtained from Jesus that gives life to the believer. The Bible says in Titus 3:4 to 6 (NIV), “But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour.”

The song writer Augustas M. Toplady, sweetly penned these awesome words:

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.

Let the water and the blood from thy wounded side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure; save from wrath and make me pure.

Let us look to the one they have pierced, who poured out His life upon the altar of sacrifice for our sins. As we gaze upon His unselfish act on our behalf so we can be reconciled to God, we see a Saviour who, while we were still sinners, died for us, because of His great love for us.

Let us purify out hearts with the washing of water and let His blood cleanse us from all sin. In the Old Testament, before things were used on the altar they were first washed in water then in blood. But here, we read that there came first blood and then water. His blood flows to wash us white as snow and His water of the Word keeps us clean in Him as we daily follow the Master, the Saviour of souls.

My friend, we look to the Saviour who suffered on the cross of Calvary and died for the sin of the world. Let us look to one they have pierced, from whom came the blood and water to wash us and present us before the Father pure and holy.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
