Part two. Matthew 21:8 to 9 (NIV) A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

This was a tradition to welcome a king who rides victoriously into the city. People would cut down of branches and lay a “red carpet”, as it were, in tribute, as a sign of honour for their coming king to ride upon, as others would wave the rest of the branches in the air and sing with triumphant praise.

Here, you have the word of God being fulfilled as Jesus Christ, the Messiah, comes riding into Jerusalem as their King on the foal of donkey to the sound of people cheering and singing, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

The Bible says in John 12:13 (NIV) “They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!’” Notice if you will how spontaneous was this anthem of praise, as if the Holy Spirit was a Divine conductor of a heavenly choir, where everyone was singing from the same hymn sheet a new song of praise and glory to Jesus, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Many years ago, Palm Sunday, as it is now known, was celebrated by ministers and their congregation at the beginning of the service, by people standing outside of the church building and waving palm branches and singing, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” at the doors of the church as people would enter in. They did this to symbolise Jesus coming as their King and celebrated it with great joy that He had come to save them.

Oh, what a great day it would be if on this Palm Sunday there was great joy in the house of the Lord, where people would lay out the “red carpet” for Jesus and enthrone Him with their praise. Oh, what blissful joy to hear people singing with voices of triumphant praise, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

My friend, behold He comes! Yes, He comes, riding on the foal of a donkey, your King, your Saviour Jesus, your Messiah! Open wide the gates of your heart and let Him in, lay your branches of tribute at the feet of Jesus and wave your banners high to celebrate, for Salvation is here.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
