1 Samuel 1:13 (NIV) ~ Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.

1 Samuel 1:13 (NIV) ~ Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.

Here is one of the most private and emotional prayers offered up to the Lord from the lips of a woman called Hannah. She had a husband who loved her, but cruel relatives who taunted her because they had conceived children while Hannah had not. Her husband loved her so much and when they went up to the temple of the Lord to offer sacrifices unto the Lord, he gave her double potions. Elkanah, her husband, loved Hannah and neither of them blamed each other for not being able to have a child. Yet even in the midst of all this Hannah just wanted a child to hold in her arms and love.

Only those who are unable to have a child can fully understand the aching feeling in your arms that long to hold a child of your own and the tears of a broken heart because of the pain of an empty womb. One day when Hannah’s family taunted her about having child, she could not take it any longer. She cried out to the Lord in bitterness of soul and wept before the Lord. The words of her lips were silent as she prayed from the depths of her heart to God. She poured out her heart to the Lord. Now Eli, the prophet of the Lord, saw her praying but he never heard a single word, and thought this was a woman who was weeping while drunk. But Hannah quickly told Eli why she was pouring out her heart to God in prayer, with tears before him. Eli said to her, “Go in peace and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.” This lifted the spirit of Hannah and no longer was her face downcast, but with hope renewed, she rose up early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord then went home to be with her husband. Then the Lord remembered Hannah, so in the course of time Hannah conceived and she gave birth to a son. She called him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah kept believing God, she kept trusting in him, even when her family taunted her, she kept believing in God and cried out to him from the depths of her heart, and God blessed her with a child. He healed her pain and brought her happiness and joy.

My friend, there are some prayers which are so personal that we pray them in our heart, even though our lips move, our tongue is silent, but our heart is lifting up our words to the Lord as we pour out our personal plea to the Lord. When in the natural it seems impossible, we turn to God who makes all things possible. God will remember you and will always listen to the prayer of your heart. Just like Hannah in our text for today in 1 Samuel 1:13 (NIV), “Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.” God heard her cry and remembered her and blessed her with child. This same God, who blessed Hannah with a child, is the same God who can cause a miracle to happen when you call out to Him in prayer.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
