Revelation 2:4 (NIV) ~ your first love.

Revelation 2:4 (NIV) ~ your first love.

Do you remember your first love? The song, Puppy Love, was a love song written by a young man named, Paul Anka, in the 1960’s. It was penned as a romantic ballad for a young woman who he was dating at the time named, Annette Funicello. About twelve years later, a young boy named, Donny Osmond, recorded the song as a number one hit record in summer of 1972. The song has these legendary lyrics:

And they called it Puppy love, oh, I guess they will never know,

How a young heart really feels, and why I love her so.

The Greek word for “first” is protos meaning first, in order of importance, prominent, above all. It is also interesting to note that the word “love” in the Greek, is agape, the active love of God for His Son and the active love His people have for God.

In Matthew 22:37 to 38, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:4 to 5 (NIV), “Hear, O Israel: The LORD your God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. This is the first and greatest commandment.” The Greek word for “greatest” is megas meaning profound, gigantic, position of greatest importance, surpassing, highest place, and number one priority. From this Greek word you get the English word, mega, meaning biggest and greatest.

Our text for today begs the question, who is your first love? Is the Lord Jesus Christ your first and greatest love? When you first fell in love with Jesus, do remember how it made you feel? All you ever wanted to do was to tell people about Him. Whenever you thought about Jesus, a huge smile would light up your face. Do you still love Him with a passion? Or, have you wondered away from your first love? Have you wondered away from the agape love for your Lord? Or, if you have let your love for Jesus and the things of the kingdom of God run cold, then return to your first love.

Stuart Townend once wrote this beautiful worship song called, “My First Love”, with these lyrics:

And like a child I will dance in Your presence, Oh, let the joy of heaven pour down on me,

I still remember the first day I met You, and I don’t ever want to lose that fire, my first love.

My friend, was your first love for Jesus just puppy love, or does it run much deeper than that? Is Jesus Christ your first and greatest love of all? Does He have the most important place in your heart? Is He your number one priority? Does your relationship with Jesus surpass all others? Do you not only love Jesus but, are also you in love with Him? Is He, as our text for today says in Revelation 2:4 (NIV), “your first love”?

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
