Matthew 21:9 ~ The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

Matthew 21:9 ~ The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

This is one of those moments in scripture that is recorded in all four Gospels. But let us look at this one account from the book of Matthew, as it describes what is happening in such a beautiful fashion: the cry of Hosanna to the Son of David, then Hosanna in the highest! The word Hosanna means, “save us,” and it is also an exclamation of praise.

The crowd wanted to make Jesus King by shouting, in John 12:13 (KJV), “Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Saying, “here is our King to save us,” but one week later they turned against Jesus, and with the same mouths that once praised Him, the same ones that called for Him to be their King, now wanted Him to be crucified. Some people’s opinions can change as often as the wind; they can be very fickle at times.

It is very interesting to note that first of all, their call of “Hosanna to the Son of David” was an earthly one, then secondly a heavenly one, “Hosanna in the highest,” or literally translated, “Save us in the highest.”  They recognised Jesus as the Son of David, a rightful heir to the throne, to be their King, but by their actions one week later, they rejected Jesus as their King.

How many people, I wonder, recognise Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the world, recognise Him as the One who rose from the dead at Easter; but refuse to accept Him as their King? They would sing His praises at Easter and Christmas, they would sing, “Hosanna,” unto Him, but never follow up their cry for Him to save them by putting their faith in Jesus.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna to the King.

Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna to the King of Kings.

Hosanna to the Son of David, Hosanna to the King of Kings,

Glory in the highest heaven, for Jesus the Messiah reigns.

My friend, let us welcome Jesus into our hearts with the cry of, “Hosanna, hosanna,” “Save us in the highest.” Let us make way for the King to come in, let us lay down our lives like palm branches before Him, and extol Him with our praise, singing, “Hosanna, hosanna, blessed is He who comes to save us!” Let our cry unto the Lord to save us, be one that is followed up by faith in Jesus Christ the Messiah.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
