Proverbs 4:20 (The Message) ~ Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice.

Proverbs 4:20 (The Message) ~ Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice.

Before the invention of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio, you had to tune the radio by hand, with your ear carefully listening for the specific frequency until you found the right one.

If I were to blow a dog whistle, you would not hear its sound; only the dog would hear it, as it has an ear that is attentive to that specific sound. So, we also, have to tune our ears to listen to the voice of God, to listen to the specific voice of the Holy Spirit, even when everyone else is talking all around us and there is distraction from every corner. We must have our ears tuned into His voice, and His alone.

I remember hearing a story from the early 1920s of several men who went for a job interview. The job was for someone to work in the military to send and receive Morse Code. Four men were sitting, waiting in the hallway, to be interviewed for the vacant position, while music was being played from the speakers nearby. All of a sudden, one of the men stood up and walked toward a door and the end of the hall without anyone telling him to do so, or so it seemed at the time. After a few minutes had passed, a man dressed in uniform opened the same door the man who had come for the interview had entered a few moments earlier and said, “Gentlemen, thank you for coming today, but the position has now been filled, for while the music was playing we played a message in Morse Code which said, “Those who are interested in the position please come through the door at the end of the hall.” The man who came for the interview and responded to the message that day had his ears tuned to listen.

There is a song by R. Robinson with these lyrics:

Come Thou fount of every blessing,

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious measure,

Sung by flaming tongues above;

O the vast, the boundless treasure,

Of my Lord’s unchanging love!

In our text for today it says this, from Proverbs 4:20 (The Message), “Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice.” Faith hears and sees what the world cannot hear and see. Just like Elijah on the mountaintop praying for rain, faith hears the sound of victory before it happens.

My friend, let us tune our hearts to God’s great frequency of faith. Let us listen with ears tuned to the voice of the Holy Spirit and walk in obedience to His words to a greater level of faith and victory every days of our lives.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
