Ecclesiastes 4:10 (NIV) If one falls down, his friend can help him up.

Ecclesiastes 4:10 (NIV) If one falls down, his friend can help him up.

In 1969, during a tour of Arnhem Land with his wife and daughter, Rolf briefly stayed with a man called Ted Egan. Ted sung him this song, which Rolf recorded on tape. When he got back to England and talked  his television producer into using the song, Rolf discovered he had lost the tape! Rolf rang Ted, twelve thousand miles away in Canberra, and got him to sing the song over the phone. Alan Braden arranged the song for the TV show, and the audience reaction was so marvelous that Rolf decided to record it. This song was top of the hit parade for seven weeks over Christmas 1969.

The cheerful lyrics are:

Two little boys had two little toys both had a wooden horse,

Gaily they played each summer’s day, warriors both of course,
One little chap then had a mishap, broke off his horse’s head,
Wept for his toy then cried with joy, As his young playmate said,

Did you think I would leave you crying, when there’s room on my horse for two,
Climb up here Jack and don’t be crying, I can go just as fast with two,
When we grow up we’ll both be soldiers, And our horses will not be toys,
And I wonder if we’ll remember, when we were two little boys.

The Bible says in our text for today in Ecclesiastes 4:10 (NIV) If one falls down, his friend can help him up.

There is something to say about true friendships that will never gives up on each other. A true friend is always there for you no matter what may happen. Someone once said, “A true friend is someone who sees the worst in you, yet still believes the best.”

The Bible talks about the friendship between Jonathan and David (NIV 1 Samuel 18 v 3 to 4 and also 1 Samuel 20 v 42.) Through a strong bond of friendship they thought the world of each other and helped each out whenever they could. They went that extra mile without even thinking about it for each other, because they were friends in the faith. Not only were they friends in faith but it was more than that, they had a covenant friendship. Jesus is our friend in the faith; who is there for us each and every day. Furthermore, we just don’t have a friendship with Jesus; we have a covenant friendship with Him.

How many of us have ever heard of a man called Abel Clary? However, many of us have heard of man of God called Charles Finney. Abel Clary went with Charles Finney wherever he went. He laid the ground for revival in prayer he was the friend of Charles Finney who prayed for him, who stood by him and who helped him, who went that extra mile for him for the glory of God.

What about the name the man Tanzing? He was the guide for Sir Edmund Hillary, they were the first ever people to climb Mount Everest. At the bottom of the mountain there is this small wooden sign with these words, “Mountain climbers always help each other”. Friends in the faith will always help each other; climb higher in the things of God.

The Bible says in Proverbs 18:24 (NIV) But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Jesus is that friend to you. The Bible says in John 15:15 (NIV) I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Jesus calls you his friend, He is the one who lifts you up when you are down, who sticks by you and comforts you, who helps you and goes that extra mile for you. True friendship knows no bounds; it is a friendship that says, “I will never give up on you.”

The Bible says in James 2:23 (NIV) and the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend. That’s exactly what Gods calls every one of you he calls you ‘His friend’.

Oh how that old gospel song comes flooding back to me, written by Joseph Scriven (1819-86)

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins grief’s to bear,

What a privilege to carry, everything to God in prayer,

O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer.

My friend, pause for one moment, and think on this, if the maker of heaven and earth, the LORD who put the stars in to space and created the universe, would call you his friend, then how truly awesome is that.

May you live in the strength of that bound of covenant friendship from the Lord. May you enjoy each and every day, His support, His unfailing friendship, and His constant prayers for you before the throne of your ABBA Father on your behalf. His promise to you is from Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) “Never will I leave you never will I forsake you”. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:10 (NIV) if one falls down, his friend can help him up. Jesus Christ is your forever friend, who will always be there for you to lift you up and restore you if you ever fall. Today if you have never done so, ask Jesus Christ to come into your life and let Him be your best friend.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
