Proverbs 24:33 to 34 (NIV), “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.”

Proverbs 24:33 to 34 (NIV), “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.”

Doing nothing brings about something. For the classic example of this, we can reflect on these words of wisdom from Proverbs 24: 30 -31, “I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.” This brings us to the conclusion, “It is time to say something about ‘nothing’!”

The sluggard did nothing, and reaped poverty. The sluggard did nothing to his garden and the weeds and thorns came up everywhere. Some of us have health problems, because we do nothing about our health. Some of us have problems with our weight because we do nothing about our weight. Some of us do nothing about our own spiritual garden, and so, it does not produce much fruit, but only weeds and thorns from the enemy. Some of us do nothing about our bad attitudes, so they are left to get worse. Some of us do nothing about the enemy walking all over us, so we experience defeat after defeat, and we let the enemy rob us of the blessings, because we do nothing about it. Some of us have problem in our marriage, and we do nothing about it. Some of us have relatives, who are lost in their sin, some are even backslidden, and we do nothing about it. Some of us do nothing about evangelism, so our church does not grow. We cannot be like the ostrich and bury our heads in the sand, and expect things to happen. So also, we cannot be like the sluggard and expect things to happen for us, when we do nothing, when we just sit back, sleeping with our arms folded in avocation, doing nothing. It is time to do something about nothing!

My friend, the wisdom of the Lord from Proverbs 24, warns us about doing nothing and the consequences thereof. It is time to do something about nothing! It is time to wake up, stand up, and do something! Doing it is just doing it! Let us attend to our spiritual garden, let us attend to our walk with the Lord, let us attend to our families, and let us do something about “nothing.” Let us be a people who are productive, who are Christ-centred, and who are purpose-driven and live life on purpose for the Lord. Let us be a people who do something about “nothing!”

God bless you my friend, Matthew.
